How do you rate your relationship with India?
• Historical and mutually enriching. We share common views on various global matters within the G77 framework, South-South Co-operation as well as at bilateral levels.
• Diplomatic ties were established upon attaining independence and they have continued to grow. Where do you find India most useful? In political or economic spheres or both?
• In both areas. Continued co-operation with India is important for mutual interest. Were you a part of Vibrant Gujarat held recently?
• Yes we were. Indeed, our prime minister was key speaker. It went on very well and we look forward to cementing the gains made from the visit.
• It might interest you to note that we have a huge Kenyans of Indian origin, most of whom are Gujaratis and trace their days to 1896 when they came to build the Kenya Uganda railway. Have signed MOUs and in which aspects?
• Yes, Kenya and India have signed many MOUs, which are largely dealt within the framework of the Joint Permanent Commission. As a follow-up, we had the last meeting of the Joint trade Commission here in New Delhi from 18th - 19th December 2008. These MOUs range from BASA, capacity building, Co-operation in Engineering of Goods, Small and Medium Scale Sector, Telecom Sector, Agricultural Sector, Human Resource Development, Lines of Credit, Drug Administration, Bilateral Investment Promotion & Protection Agreement (BIPA), Proposal for review of the following MOUs are under consideration- Tourism, Bilateral Air Service Agreement, Administration of Standards. Potential for further areas of co-operation are ample.

Anything else you would like to say?
• Yes, our biggest task now as a mission is to consolidate the existing cordial relations with particular focus on attracting investments. This is central as it mirrors our national Vision 2030 whose primary objective is to improve the life of Kenyans by focusing away from aid to investment. Hence, I take the opportunity to invite Indian investors into Kenya. Opportunities for investment with returns are there. As a priority, in the Infrastructure (Roads, railway, ports), energy, agriculture (value addition) and tourism. This could be in form of joint venture, wholly owned or PPP which is a very successful model in infrastructure and energy development in India.
• Certainly, tourism plays an important role in our economy. We offer an extremely unique product which I would like to invite Indians to visit and sample. Equally, investment opportunity exists in the sector. What are your plans to sell Kenya as an overseas tourism market?
• This is an ongoing task. We have continued to work closely with tour operators alongside Kenya Airways; we have as country participated in travel related events globally as well as in India. The recent (7th - 9th and 12th- 14th February 2009 respectively) in Mumbai and New Delhi (Outbound Travel Mart - 2009) is a case in mind. There is still a lot more to be done specially in advertising in the media.

You have Bomas of Kenya, Kilimanjaro and Serenget, but few tourism to Kenya, why?
• As mentioned above, budgetary constraint has remained a handicap. This has effectively kept us away from major global media and advertising outlet where our competitors have an edge. It is with pleasure therefore to speak to you convinced that through your outlet, this message will reach many more to experience this rare expedition. I want to assure you that most of all that appears in various channels is available and live in Kenya. Any plans for promoting such places with Indian tourists?
• Absolutely. As we continue to plan with the body charged with the mandate, the Kenya Tourism Board, may I invite you to visit www.magicalkenya.com. Please encourage your readers to visit the site or call on the High Commission for details.
• In that endeavor, may it please you to note that our Minister for Tourism Hon. Najib Balala early this month won the coveted "African Minister for Tourism of the Year Award".
