Don't leave them behind
The first thing most people think of when talking about travelling these days with family and children is, of course a cruise ship. Many of the newer cruise ships have so many things to do on board that you really don't need to get off the ship for the entire duration of your cruise vacation. Onboard a cruise ship there are children's clubs which have activities for children starting about 3 years old right up until 18. They also have family activities planned throughout the day, flexible dining schedules, swimming pools, game rooms, movie theatres, ice skating rinks, surf lessons, rock climbing walls, mini golf, and so many more activities to choose from just try to get bored. And in between all of these activities you can take the kids on a snorkel adventure, fishing trip, jungle exploration or any number of other day trips when you are in port. All cruise lines offer cruise-and-stay packages that allow you to stay at the departure/return ports of call for any number of days that you choose.
Another option that many families aren't sure about, are resort vacations. There are so many resorts that cater to children and families you can always find one that will fit your particular needs. Beaches Resorts are the most recognized family oriented vacation resorts, but there are resorts that offer anything from private nanny services, to children's clubs, to teen youth clubs, etc. There are many resorts and hotels that offer flexible departure dates, direct flights, family friendly settings, and so much more. Many resorts allow for more than 4 people staying in the same room for those families that are a little larger suites are available, a very nice option to have as a parent - you can put the kids to bed and watch a little TV.
It can be very stressful to leave your family, but it can be just as stressful if not more so to even consider packing up the kids and hopping on an airplane for hours on end. Destinations like Singapore, Bangkok or Pataya may be a few hours trip by air but still that can be a long time to keep the kids entertained. There are many ways to try to pass the time; they can watch out the window, that gets boring after about 30 seconds… You can watch the in-flight movie, sometimes good, sometimes not, etc. A few things I always suggest my friends is to take lots of things to entertain them in his carry-on bag. A laptop with some computer games… a hand-held game console PSP etc. A few other time passing items that I recommend for the travel time is games, colouring books, books and snacks. Almost anything your child does at home to pass time is likely a good idea. Make sure it's something they can do in a relatively small area, and the items must pass regulations to board the plane. I have traveled with my children, it was a lot of fun and a great experience. The next time I am not sure if we will choose to go on a cruise or to a resort, but either way we will need a lot to entertain on the aircraft, as well as onboard a cruise ship or at a resort. From my experience travelling with my children, choosing the right flight, resort, cruise ship, etc. is a must.
