The policy of TN Tourism is to promote the tourism on a grand scale by identifying new destinations and creating new circuits which are quite pleasing and enjoyable along with leisure tourism, rural tourism, boating, fairs and festivals apart from medical tourism

Tourism is a boom industry and has been going on a steady pace all over India with a growth rate of 13-14 per cent. The Tamil NaduTourism is no exception and is feeling the same buoyancy for last 2-3 years.

Tamil Nadu Tourism has also taken a number of initiatives to promote tourism in a big way. The policy of TN Tourism is to promote the tourism on a grand scale by identifying new destinations and creating new circuits which are quite pleasing and enjoyable along with leisure tourism, rural tourism, boating, fairs and festivals apart from medical tourism with special emphasis on allopathic treatment.

Marketing tourism is very important for this purpose and we avail every opportunity of participating in various trade exhibitions and cultural fairs in India and abroad. we take part in international tourism events, organise programs to showcase the potentials of Tamil Nadu Tourism.

The travel circuits in and around Thanjavur and Kanchipuram are very important. The Rail cum Road connections toward Mumbai, Delhi , Kolkata and Ahmedabad are also very popular.

For this purpose we plan to introduce a new Rail cum Road tour from Delhi for 14 days which will not only cover major destinations of Tamil Nadu but also Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, Bangalore and Mysore in the state Karnatka and Kochi and Trivandrum in the state of Kerala. It will therefore, be a synergy among all the four states of south india . It will also help marketing the wonderful destinations not only of Tamil Nadu but also do so for the other famous destinations of other southern states.

Dr C.M.K. Reddy, President, Private Medical Practitioners' Association is taking active part in formation of Health Tourism Desk in Tamil Nadu Tourist Complex for the promotion of Medical Tourism.

 

Excerpts from the interview of prof. CMK Reddy

 

After the development of corporate sector in India , many doctors are coming back to India to resettle here. The infrastructure in medical field is no less than the USA and UK and cost wise it is much cheaper than these countries. The main advantage is the time period that patient has to wait for, to get the treatment.

 

We should have an organized system of things so that they might run smoothly. If a patient comes from Malaysia , gulf or any other country he might contact a doctor himself and get treated. But if there is any medical agency to look after, the things would be better. If a patient returns happily after treatment it works wonder to promote medical tourism.

 

We are very happy to know that TN govt. is taking interest in medical tourism. When we proposed the idea of a medical agency they immediately accepted it because the idea of a medical agency adds credibility to the institution. The procedure delay can also be avoided that way and a patient can be taken to the right doctor at right time.

 

Every medical facility is available in Tamil Nadu and that too in very reasonable rates. They can go in for leisure tourism before or after the treatment.

 

Another area we want to improve is immigration procedures so that inbound treatment in India is easier to avail. Highly specialized, well-trained and committed doctors at reasonably good price do all the treatments. Even after leisure tourism, the package worked out is much cheaper than the medical costs in their own country and they return with pleasant memories.

 

We are working out with the Department of External Affairs to make the procedure for immigration much simpler for the patients. Their word of mouth would surely help to increase the medical tourism.

Tamil Nadu Tourism is focusing on heritage as well as spiritual tourism. The state has many art and culture as well as spiritual centers and we wish to highlight this particular segment to the world. Our expectation is more than 2.5 million of pilgrim and heritage tourists from all over the world.

There are so many Indians and especially Tamils in all parts of world. We wish to bring them and their children here to look at their cultural heritage and understand the greatness of their cultural heritage by visiting the famous places in this respect.

Secondly, Medical Tourism is another focused arena of Tamil Nadu Tourism. TN has world class hospitals particularly for eyes, heart, ENT, dental care, kidney and many other things. The treatment here is world class and given by the best doctors with many years of experience in their respective medical fields.

TN Tourism will shortly launch a separate website on medical tourism on which the data of various medical facilities are available all over the state particularly in Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore . Tamil Nadu medical fraternity is well versed in human organ transplantation like eyes, kidneys, bone and knee joint replacement at the very affordable cost.

We already have started a medical tourism desk in our Headquarters at Chennai and shortly we will have a travel desk in all identified hospitals. These hospitals have already appointed some persons for tourism guidance and they will be given proper training. This process will definitely boost tourism.The persons who accompany the patients during, before or after the treatment would like to visit pilgrim centers or leisure tourism, this issue will also be focused in future.

When you walk into our Obesity Clinic, you will be first assessed by a Nutrition therapist who will assess your food habits and other nutritional related mattes A General Physician will then examine you for medical associated diseases . A complete cardio work up will be done by the Cardiologist to rule out any cardio-related problem. Finally, an endocrinologist will assess you before you meet the Chief Surgeon who will be operating on you.

Abdominoplasty or 'tummy tuck" procedureis meant for persons with flabby belly associated with or without a hernia. By this method about 7-8Kg of fatty tissue is knocked off and any associated hernia is also repaired. We have done a whopping 700-800 of these procedures in the last 9 years with fabulous results. The patients have to stay in for 7-10 days, but are uniformly happy with the flattening of the lower abdomen.

Liposuction, is less invasive and done by sucking out the fat from arms, thighs, buttocks and lower abdomen after melting it through tiny holes. The advantage is, that it is almost a Day care Procedure, with discharge by evening or the next morning. Again the weight loss will be in the range of 6 - 8Kg. with very early recovery.

The most popular and effective surgery of all times is BARIATRIC SURGERY for persons who are morbidly obese or who have BMI > 35 with other health risk factors / problems. We in our hospitals adopt various procedures for eg. Vertical banded Gastroplasty, ProRing or Long Roux-en-Y gastrojejunal anastomosis.

 

One last thing is diabetes. By the stem cell therapy or surgery the diabetes gets completely cure.
